In recent years, the Critical Minerals Institute (CMI) has launched major initiatives to drive its vision through expert research and strategic guidance. A key effort is its “think tank” of analysts who monitor global critical-minerals trends and advise on solutions. In early 2024, CMI introduced its first Critical Minerals Watchlist, highlighting 18 minerals vital for Western economic growth and exposing supply-chain vulnerabilities.
Building on that, CMI released the Critical Minerals Watchlist 2025—covering 23 minerals—and in August 2025 unveiled the CMI Watchlist 2025, expanding the roster to 24 materials by adding steel and molybdenum. Derived from analyses of multiple national and multilateral lists, this Watchlist acts as a data-driven blueprint for governments and investors navigating an era of rising demand and geopolitical risk.
